Traditional Microneedling in Hilliard, OH
What Traditional Microneedling Can Help With
Microneedling is a skin-quality treatment. It works gradually and is often planned as a series. Our providers commonly use it for:
- Rough or uneven texture
- Fine lines
- The look of mild to moderate acne scars
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Overall skin rejuvenation and a smoother, healthier-looking surface
SkinPen was the first microneedling device authorized by the FDA. It’s cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults 22 and older, and later received clearance for neck wrinkles. The FDA also notes that microneedling devices are medical devices meant for use by professionals, not at home.
Traditional vs. RF Microneedling: Which Is Right for You?
Both treatments use fine needles to trigger collagen, but they aren’t interchangeable. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy that heats the deeper layers of the skin, which changes what it’s used for and what recovery looks like.
| Traditional microneedling | RF microneedling |
How it works | Fine needles create controlled micro-channels | Needles plus radiofrequency heat in deeper layers |
Device at Fade | SkinPen® | Lutronic Genius® |
Often chosen for | Texture, fine lines, mild scarring, general skin quality | Deeper acne scars, pores, and mild laxity |
Recovery | Usually shorter, with redness for a day or two | Often a few more days of redness and swelling |
Good fit if you want | A gentler starting point or regular maintenance | More intensive remodeling |
The right choice depends on your goals, skin, and schedule, not on which treatment sounds stronger. Your provider will recommend one, or a plan that uses both over time. Learn more about RF microneedling in Hilliard.
What to Expect From Your Treatment
Consultation
Your provider looks at your skin, asks about your goals and health history, and recommends a plan.
Preparation
Your skin is cleansed, and a numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable.
Treatment
Your provider moves the SkinPen across the treatment area, adjusting needle depth for each zone. Most people feel a light vibration and some scratchiness rather than pain.
Right after
Your skin will look pink to red, similar to a mild sunburn, and may feel warm or tight.
Recovery and Aftercare
Redness usually fades within a day or two, and skin may feel dry or flake lightly as it heals. Most people go back to work the next day. Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions, which usually include:
- Using only the gentle products your provider approves for the first several days
- Skipping makeup until your provider says it's okay, usually at least a day
- Avoiding sun exposure, and using sunscreen once your provider clears it
- Holding off on retinoids, exfoliating acids, and harsh cleansers
- Skipping strenuous exercise, swimming, and saunas for a short time

Planning a Series and Maintenance
One session gives your skin a boost, but most concerns improve more with a series. In SkinPen’s clinical studies, patients received about three treatments spaced roughly a month apart. Collagen keeps building for weeks after each session, so improvement shows gradually.
After your series, many patients schedule maintenance treatments to keep their results. Your provider will recommend a schedule based on your skin and goals. For ways microneedling can support your routine at home, see how traditional microneedling enhances your skincare routine.
Who Should Wait
Microneedling suits most healthy adults. Your provider may recommend waiting or another treatment if you:
- Have active acne breakouts, a cold sore, or an infection in the treatment area
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have used isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past six months
- Have a history of keloids, a bleeding disorder, or a condition that affects healing
Traditional Microneedling FAQs
Numbing cream makes it comfortable for most people. You may feel light vibration, scratching, or pressure, especially over bony areas like the forehead.
Your skin may look brighter within about a week. Improvements in texture and scars build more slowly as collagen forms, and are most noticeable after you complete a series.
Microneedling doesn’t use heat or light, which makes it an option for many skin tones. Your provider will still assess your skin and adjust your treatment to lower the risk of pigment changes.
Wait until your provider says it’s okay, usually at least 24 hours. Applying makeup too soon can irritate healing skin or introduce bacteria into the channels.
It depends on your concern. Microneedling focuses on texture and collagen, while treatments like BBL HERO target sun spots and redness. Your provider can help you decide.
