Kybella in Hilliard, OH
What Kybella Treats, and What It Doesn't
According to its FDA prescribing information, Kybella is approved to improve moderate to severe fullness caused by fat under the chin (submental fat) in adults. It isn’t approved or recommended for fat anywhere else on the face or body.
Fullness under the chin can come from several things, and Kybella only addresses one of them:
- Fat under the chin: what Kybella is designed to treat
- Loose skin: Kybella doesn’t tighten skin, and removing fat can make laxity more visible
- Neck muscle bands: vertical bands in the neck need a different approach
- Jaw and chin structure: a small or receding chin can make the area look fuller even with little fat
- Jowls: fullness along the jawline, which Kybella isn’t meant to treat

How Kybella Works
Kybella’s active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already uses to break down fat from food. When it’s injected into fat under the chin, it breaks down the walls of fat cells. Over the following weeks, your body clears them away.
Because treated fat cells don’t come back, results are long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. Change is gradual, so you won’t see the final result right after your appointment.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Kybella tends to work well for adults who have a noticeable pocket of soft fat under the chin that hasn’t gone away with diet and exercise, with reasonably good skin tone in the area. Before each session, your provider feels the area to confirm there’s enough fat to treat.
Another approach may be recommended if:
- Loose skin, rather than fat, is the main cause of fullness
- Neck bands or chin structure are driving the look
- You've had surgery or other procedures under the chin, or plan to
- You have trouble swallowing, or an infection in the area
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding
- You take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, which increases bruising

Your Treatment Course
Consultation. Your provider assesses the area in profile, confirms the fullness is fat, and recommends a plan.
Treatment day. The area is marked, and Kybella is injected in a series of small injections under the chin. The appointment is quick, and you can go back to normal activities.
Sessions. Most people need more than one treatment, and many see a noticeable change after the second. Treatments are spaced at least four weeks apart, usually four to six, with up to six sessions. The number you need depends on how much fat you have and the result you want.
What to Expect With Swelling
Swelling is the part patients ask about most, so here’s an honest picture. You will be noticeably swollen under the chin after each treatment. It’s usually most visible in the first two or three days, improves a lot by the end of the first week, and mostly settles within about two weeks. Numbness, tenderness, bruising, redness, and small firm areas are also common and fade over the following weeks.
Plan treatment around your schedule, especially before events or photos. For a detailed timeline, read Kybella swelling day by day.
To help swelling go down:
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated for 3 to 5 nights
- Don't touch or rub the area for 5 to 7 days
- Skip makeup on the area for 72 hours
- Avoid intense exercise, sun, and heat for 7 days, and alcohol for 48 hours
- Wait 14 days before other treatments in the same area
Less Common Side Effects
Less often, Kybella can affect a nerve near the jaw, causing an uneven smile or lip weakness. In clinical trials this happened in 4% of patients, and every case resolved on its own. Trouble swallowing occurred in 2% of patients, usually during swelling, and also resolved. Rare risks include hair loss in the treated area, sores, and skin damage. Call us at 614-820-8050 if you notice an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, or an open sore. For more detail, read about Kybella side effects.
