What Is Traditional Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure utilizing a specialized device with ultra-fine, sterile needles which create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins responsible for maintaining skin elasticity and a youthful appearance.

This type of microneedling is a versatile treatment suitable for various skin types and concerns, offering a natural approach to address a range of skincare issues without the need for more aggressive interventions.

Microneedling is a multi-step process that utilizes the body’s natural healing abilities to achieve optimal skin rejuvenation and renewal without using any chemicals or undergoing surgery. The procedure involves the following key stages:

1

Consultation

The process begins with a thorough consultation with a qualified skincare professional. During this step, your skincare expert will assess your skin's condition, medical history, and any contraindications to ensure safety and efficacy.

2

Preparation

On the day of your treatment, we will cleanse and prepare your skin. Our practitioner may apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort during the microneedling process.

3

Microneedling

Once the skin is prepped, the microneedling device is gently moved across the targeted areas. The device's ultra-fine needles create controlled micro-injuries on the skin's surface.

4

Collagen Induction

As the skin heals from the micro-injuries, the body begins the production of collagen and elastin. These crucial proteins help to improve the skin's texture, firmness, and overall appearance.

5

Absorption

The microchannels created in the skin act as pathways for topical serums and other skincare products. This enhances the absorption and effectiveness of these products, further improving the skin's condition.

6

Post-Treatment Care

After the procedure, your skincare professional will provide post-treatment care instructions. These may include avoiding direct sunlight, using gentle skincare products, and keeping the skin hydrated.

Benefits of Traditional Microneedling

This minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure offers numerous benefits to anyone seeking for lasting skin rejuvenation. If you give this treatment a try, you can enjoy the following benefits:

Collagen Production

Microneedling stimulates the production of collagen, a vital protein that promotes skin elasticity and firmness. Increased collagen levels lead to a smoother and more youthful complexion, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Reduced Scarring

Microneedling can effectively diminish the visibility of scars from acne, injuries, or stretch marks. By encouraging the formation of new, healthy skin tissue, the treatment gradually fades scars, leading to a smoother and more even skin surface.

Improved Texture and Tone

Microneedling helps to even out skin tone and improve texture, addressing issues like roughness, large pores, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage. After the procedure, you can expect a more uniform, radiant complexion over time.

Enhanced Skincare Product Absorption

The microchannels created during the microneedling procedure allow for better absorption of skincare products, maximizing their effectiveness in addressing specific skin concerns, such as blackheads, whiteheads, acne, and more.

Non-Invasive and Minimal Downtime

It’s a non-invasive treatment that does not require surgical incisions or other complicated procedures. It results in minimal downtime and allows most patients to resume their normal daily activities shortly after treatment.

Traditional Microneedling FAQs & Aftercare
How does microneedling work?

Microneedling is a procedure where tiny sterilized needles gently prick the skin. This process boosts collagen and elastin production, leading to skin healing and a more youthful look.

How old do I have to be to receive a microneedling treatment at Fade Aesthetics and Wellness?

At Fade Aesthetics, we begin treatment at age 18. No one under the age of 18 will receive treatment, regardless of parental consent. There is no upper age limit to receiving treatment. It is never too late to come in and receive a full-face consultation with our trained professional aesthetic injectors!

Is there anything I should not do after my treatment?

Microneedling is a quick and safe in-office procedure with little to no downtime. Tiny sterile needles are used to prick your skin and create microscopic wounds. The microscopic wounds enable your body to enter a healing phase which creates more collagen and elastin.

We recommend the following precautions after your treatment in order to optimize your results:

  • Avoid strenuous activities or workout routines for at least 72 hours following your treatment.
  • Avoid sunscreen for 24 hours, if possible. After that, apply sunscreen any time you are going outdoors. Minimize sun exposure for the first seven days after your treatment.
  • Avoid swimming or any submersion in water for 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Do not use any other skin care products besides the LIFT HG serum you are given at your appointment for the first 24 hours following your procedure. If you run out of the LIFT HG, you may use Aquaphor or a non-comedogenic, nonscented lotion (we recommend (Cereve Moisturizing Cream).
  • Do not use your regular skincare products such as Vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid serums, retinoids, or glycolic or salicylic-based cleansers for seven days after your procedure.
  • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, naprosyn, etc., for seven days following your treatment.
  • Do not use ice, arnica gel, or bromelain on your skin for seven days after your treatment.

If you have any concerns, please contact us at 614-820-8050.

Are there any possible side effects to my treatment?

Microneedling is a safe and quick in-office procedure with little to no downtime. The most common side effect of the treatment is a sunburn-like appearance following your treatment that gradually improves over the next 3-7 days. A small percentage of people may experience the following side effects:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Tightness
  • Itching
  • Peeling

Typically these side effects are mild and go away without any other treatment over the next several days.

Are there any contraindications to receiving a microneedling treatment?

Yes. There are a few contraindications to microneedling treatments.

  • Active acne, especially inflammatory lesions
  • Active herpes (cold sores) or other open lesions in the treatment area.
  • Active skin cancer in the treatment area.
  • Active infection in the treatment area.
  • Allergies to stainless steel or topical anesthetics.
  • Immunosuppression or uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Current or recent (within the last six months) use of drugs containing the ingredient isotretinoin (such as Accutane).
  • History of extreme keloid scarring.

There are very few people with true contraindications to microneedling treatment. If you have concerns or questions, our trained professional aesthetics injectors will be able to assist you during your consultation and let you know if the treatment is right for you!

Am I allowed to touch my face after treatment?

We recommend avoiding touching the treatment area for a minimum of 24 hours. The micro-channels that were created during the treatment need time to heal, and touching these areas can increase the risk of infection.

Can I wear makeup after my treatment?

We recommend avoiding any makeup for the first 24 hours after your treatment. Following this, you may apply mineral makeup. After 72 hours, you may apply your regular makeup.

How soon after can I go back to my normal exercise routine?

Patients can generally resume their daily activities immediately following treatment. However, light exercise should be resumed 24 hours after your treatment, and strenuous exercise must be avoided for 72 hours after your treatment.

Can I receive treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Unfortunately, there is very little research or data regarding the use of microneedling and the topical anesthetics that are applied prior to your treatment in pregnant or nursing individuals. You can safely resume or initiate treatment after you have delivered your baby and/or weaned from nursing.

How soon can I drink alcohol after my treatment?

We recommend avoiding alcohol for 72 hours following your treatment. Alcohol has dehydrating properties which can slow your skin’s healing process. Alcohol can also cause flushing and increased bruising if consumed too soon after treatment.

How long can I expect my treatment to last?

Microneedling results are not permanent due to the ever-changing nature of living skin tissue. The longevity of the effects varies between individuals and depends on various factors. Typically, you can anticipate the benefits to last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

For best results, we recommend a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. By completing the series and adhering to proper skincare, your results may last much longer. Remember, consistent maintenance is key to prolonging the benefits of microneedling.

Are there any possible complications?

Complications related to a microneedling procedure are rare. There’s a small risk of infection, allergic reaction, mild pain, as well as scars and texture changes of the skin.

How long can I keep receiving microneedling treatments?

There is no limit to the number of microneedling treatments you can receive as long as they are spaced 4-6 weeks apart to allow proper healing in between treatments.

When should I schedule my appointment for my next treatment?

We recommend spacing your treatments 4-6 weeks apart to allow for proper healing of the skin between each treatment. We typically ask you to schedule your next appointment at the time of your treatment in order to secure your spot and remove any guessing from the process.

How many treatments are usually necessary?

Every individual treatment will improve the look and feel of your skin. All skin types are different and thus require a different number of treatments. Our team members are trained to assess your skin, help determine your goals, and establish a plan for treatment.

It is common to need 3-4 treatments 4-6 weeks apart in order to achieve significant improvement or resolution of some skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation (dark spots/age spots), acne, and acne scarring. At your initial consultation, our team member will help develop a tailored treatment plan for you.
